Another beautiful day and another night of fantastic racing as four different classes took to the track Saturday evening at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. The pits were overflowing with cars as round seven of the race schedule saw 30 Legends Cars of Alberta compete for the Doritos 50 cup, 19 mini stock cars in for the invitational, eight Sask Pro IV cars up from Kings Park Speedway in Regina and 22 thunder stock/bombers compete in the Rick Fredrickson Memorial.
It was absolutely picturesque to look down from the mezzanine and see all the brightly coloured race cars and crews bustling around getting their cars ready for their next race. A record 22 events took to the track as each class went through their qualifying, heats and feature races. In qualifying, the #4 of Todd Jalbert set a new track record in the Mini Stock Invitational Division at 17.731 seconds.
The evening got off to a thunderous start with a flyover of the visiting
B-25 bomber during the playing of our National Anthem. The Legends then took to the track with their Heat 1A, won by the #42 Hugh Williamson, followed by #29 Aaron Friend and #4 Larry Carlson. In the Legends Heat 1B, #15 Dave McKean crossed the line first, with #9 Bill Busby taking second and #17 Ira Laughy coming in third.
In Mini Stock Heat 1A, #23 Dan Burwash took the checkered, followed across the line by #76 Steve Hamilton and #62 Craig Heintz. In the Mini Stock Heat 1B, #19 Aaron Anderson was first to the checkered flag, followed by #77 Frank Vangool and #41 Jim Barnsley.
In the Thunder Stock Heat 1A, Kevin Nixey piloted the #23 to the finish line first, followed by #8 Dan Pearce and #18 Mike Rea. Next up, in the Thunder Stock Heat 1B, #19 Rylan Utigard was first, #81 Barry Stefaniuk was second and #49 Mickey Pogoda placed third.
The Sask Pro IV division from Regina took to the track for their Heat A, with #99 Scott Robins taking first, #11 Norm Kindred taking seconds and
#21 Ian Clothier. The Pro IV field was shortened for the evening with
#6 suffering mechanical problems in pre-race practice and the #2 of Todd Hart bowing out in lap 11 of the first Heat due to engine problems.
As the second round of heats took to the track, the Legends were first up with their Heat 2A, seeing the #45 of Jarrod Schaufert taking first,
#29 Aaron Friend coming in second and #14 Curtis Blanchette taking third. In the Legends Heat 2B, #17 Ira Laughy was first to the checkered, followed by #15 Dave McKean and #78 Brian Mario.
Next up was the Mini Stock Heat 2A, which saw Todd Jalbert in the #4 first, #28 Brennen Forseille second and #19 Aaron Anderson third. In the Mini Stock Heat 2B race, #69 Kim Regier won her first race of the season, followed by #88 Allison Nagorski and #13 Mike Leather.
Followed by the Thunder Stock Heat B1, #59 Johnny Matsala was first to the finished, #49 Mickey Pogoda second and #19 Rylan Utigard third. In the Thunder Stock Heat 2B, #99 Jack Friesen was first, #14 Darcy Bute second and #22 Ryan Fredrickson third.
Finally in the heats, with the Sask Pro IV Heat B, #92 John Buss was first, #104.9 Reg Oxtoby was second and #11 Norm Kindred was third.
The final race before the features was the Legends B Main, won by #18 Kevin Kemna, second was #26 Ernie Ludwig and third was #122 John Thomas.
#7 John Archer was fourth and #33 Darryl Hogenson was fifth, rounding out the top five that would transfer to the 25 car Doritos 50 feature.
First up in the features was the Parts Source Mini Stock Invitational 40 Feature, with the Mosaic Concrete Designers #19 Ford Escort of Aaron Anderson picking up the first place trophy. Second place was taken by Frank Vangool in the #77 ‘The Shark’ Tiburon and third was picked up by Jim Barnsley in his #41 Streetwise Neon.
In the action filled Hertz Equipment Rental Thunder Stock Rick Fredrickson Memorial 50, local points leader #19 Rylan Utigard checked out early when he broke a rear axle in the first lap. With lots of spins, paint trading and outright hits, in the end Kevin Nixey kept it clean and picked up the checkered flag and the biggest trophy in the #23 Young Guns Racing Caprice. The second place trophy went to Jack Friesen in the #99 Rock Fridge Chevy Monte Carlo. Third place trophy was taken home by Mickey Pogoda in her #49 Family Racing Caprice Classic.
Bad luck hit Regina’s Kings Park Speedway President John Buss in the Pro IV Feature as he checked up on the first lap and went hard into the inside wall. After being cleared by MD Ambulance, John assessed the damage to his car and could only say he has a lot of work ahead of him before the car sees the track again. In the end, #99 Scott Robins picked up the checkered flag, #11 Norm Kindred was second and #21 Ian Clothier was third.
The main feature of the night was the Legends Cars of Alberta Dent Clinic Doritos 50. With 47 laps in the books, it came down to a green, white, checkered finish with Ira Laughy picking up the checkered flag in the #17. #14 Curtis Blanchette was second and #29 Aaron Friend was third. In the individual classes, Ira Laughy was first in the Pro Class, #78 Brian Mario was first in the Masters Class and #9 Bill Busby was first in the Semi-Pro Class.
In a bit of a surprising and pleasing announcement earlier in the day, we learned that we will probably be seeing a lot more of Curtis Blanchette around the track as he is moving to Saskatoon next week. The
17 year old has been accepted into the Engineering College at the U of S and will be starting classes in earlier September. Congratulations Curtis and welcome to Saskatoon.
