STROUD, ON - Sunset Speedway welcomed in the first race night on July the 5th to be exact with a perfect night of racing a full house, a full pits and some of the best racing you will see anywhere in Ontario. We welcomed back the very loud and throaty engine Oscaar Outlaw Super late Models for their second and last visit of 2008 and both were great shows and our only regret is they are not back for additional show maybe next year.
The night's sponsor was Lucas Oil Products and their rep Brian Durette entertained customers before the show and it's great to have them on board this year and it promises to be bigger and better with some exciting news to come at the conclusion of the '08 season but it will be fantastic news for the 2009 season. We also had the Shriners on hand for a 50/50 draw and 2 bike giveaways for a boy and a girl and they raised $1600 and the money goes to great causes throughout the community well done guys.
At intermission we had a car show with some fine looking machines 4 in all to entertain everyone on hand just before the feature action got under way. The feature winners on the night were # 70 Jeff Hanley, the son of Canadian stock car legend # 72 Junior Hanley, who has picked up the mantel and continued to win features especially at Sunset Speedway where Jr. won his share, won the Lucas Oil Products 50 lap OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model event, The other Walters, Herb to be exact # 88 won the Domino's Pizza Thunder Car, # 78 Jason Martin won the Fox's 4 Cylinder Road Runners race and # 95 Mike Robinson Jr. took home the four fun feature and # 60 Dave Botting the B Main.
OSCAAR OUTLAW SUPER LATE MODELS:
The OSCAAR rolled out for their 50 lap event the car to beat appeared to be the 70 machine of Jeff Hanley as he was on the pole and would be extremely difficult to get around saying that on the drop of the green Hanley jumped to the lead with # 49 Rob Clarke, # 88 TJ Woolsey, # 68 Stu Robinson Jr. and # 22 Glenn Watson as the fast 5.
There was 1 caution on lap 3 and the remainder of the 50 laps were counted off without incident and by lap 13 Hanley had closed up and was ready to lap cars which stared on lap 17. As the laps rolled along Hanley was clearly the class of the field as he pulled away from Clarke and Woolsey battling for second and then another space to Robinson and then back to Watson and #16p Gary Passer in a tussle for 5th.
The order of the race stayed the same and the top 3 closed up as they weaved through lapped traffic but nobody had anything for Hanley on this night so as they exited turn 4 to take the checkered flag the fast 5 were Hanley, Clarke, Woolsey, Robinson and Watson. The heat winners were # 7t Jeff Dunford, Clarke, Hanley and Woolsey.
Congratulations to Jeff and his crew on a dominating win just like his father Jr. used to do at Sunset Speedway as I witnessed myself on several occasions and a special thanks to all the OSCAAR folks for 2 great shows and hopefully we can entertain more events next year as the races are fantastic from start to finish.
THE DOMINO'S PIZZA THUNDER CARS:
There were 19 thunder cars ready to take on the fastest 1/3 mile oval in Ontario and it promised to be outstanding as there have been 2 significant changes in the thunder division as owner Wes Good raised the winner's portion of the purse to $600 which is the largest to my knowledge in Ontario and we lengthened the feature to 30 laps from 25 as requested by the drivers. On the drop of the green # 3 Keith Butler grabbed the point with # 58 Stan Coe, # 8 Joseph Wise, # 84 Ken Weisbrod and # 64 Lucas Oil sponsored Ryan Semple the fast 5.
On lap 4 the caution flew as # 51 Mark Adams, # 98 Steve Hart and # 40 Paul Scott got together and sent to the back. On the restart Butler held the point but was under heavy pressure from Stan Coe who finally manoeuvred his way around Butler and in behind we had Wise, # 25 Kristi Wolfe with # 88 Herb Walters and # 45 Steve Slaughter Jr. on the move to the front. At the halfway mark Coe was the point man but there were 2 hungry veterans looking for their share of the lead as Walters and Slaughter had moved to 2nd and 3rd to the 58 machine looking for any opening while Wolfe and # 27 Donnie Beattie were in the top 5. Coe had a fair lead but finally Walters and Slaughter ran down the Coe car in lapped traffic and closed to his back bumper with 5 laps to go.
Coe was still the leader but Walters got along side and they battled around the tight oval while Slaughter sat in 3rd letting the top 2 battle and could end up the winner if these 2 take each other out but finally Walters got by Coe and along with came the 45 car with Wolfe and Beattie were the other top 5. As they exited turn 4 to take the checkered flag Walters held off Slaughter while Coe, Wolfe and Beattie were the top 5. The heat winners were Weisbrod, Coe, Slaughter and # 69 Rob Skyler. Outstanding show by the thunders that was as good a show as you will see anywhere and congratulations to Herb and the crew on a great feature win and I noticed there was another Walters helping out Herb as Stompin' Tom was on hand maybe the magic rubbed off great race Herb.
THE FOX'S BAKERY & DELI 4 CYLINDER ROAD RUNNERS:
On the drop of the last year's points champion # 00 Matt Henderson grabbed the lead with # 08 Stacy Clarke, # 04 Brian Love, # 48 Nick Brown and # 28 Nick Weeda were the top 5. At the halfway point Henderson still paced the field while Brown, Love, # 78 Jason Martin and # 54 Joe Ireton were the fast 5 and it looked like Henderson would hang on for the win but the fastest car on the track was Martin who moved to the back bumper of the Henderson machine.
Martin using lapped traffic to his advantage finally getting around Henderson to take the lead while Brown, Love and # 63 Dave Burrows were the fast 5. As they exited turn 4 to take the checkered flag the running order was Martin, Henderson, Brown, Love and Burrows. The heat winners were # 45 Colt Carcone and Burrows while # 14 Ken Britt won the consi. Congratulations to Jason and the crew on a wonderful feature victory.
THE FOX'S FOUR FUNS:
There were 24 four funs ready to take on Sunset oval which is wide enough to allow 4 wide racing which is great for the fans. On the drop of the green flag # 95 Mike Robinson Jr. grabbed the early lead with #24 Ryan Stewart, # 33 Ron Goodall, # 51 Bill Haliwell and # 52 Jayson Brown the top 5. Robinson enjoyed a healthy lead while Goodall was in the runner up spot under heavy pressure from # 6 Terry Woodley while Stewart and # 15 Bob Mercer round out the top 5.
As the laps were winding down no one was going to catch the 95 car of Robinson but there was a mad scramble for position as Woodley moved into second while Goodall, Mercer and # 35 Myles Jamieson were scrambling for position and that is the way they crossed the finish line to finish the event. The heat winners were Jamieson, # 66 Bob Krystal and Mercer while # 79 Nicole Podewils won the consi and # 60 Dave Botting took home the "B" Main.
Congratulations to Mike and the crew on a great feature win and to all the 4 fun drivers an outstanding feature race with action all over the track good clean racing.
There are a number of people to thank on this outstanding show we would like to thank Brian Durett rep for Lucas Oil Products for the night's sponsorship and stay tuned for some news about their involvement in the 2009 race season as they are extremely happy with their involvement to date in '08.
The fine folks from the Huronia Shriners for running a 50/50 draw and bike give away as they collected $1600 and gave away 2 bikes for the kids great job guys as the money will be put to great use in the community. Finally we would like to thank the OSCAAR Outlaw Late Model series people drivers and staff alike for another fantastic show that the huge crowd really enjoyed and hopefully they will be back bigger and better next year.
Circle the next 2 weeks at Sunset Speedway as next week we have a 40 lap thunder event as well as the regular classes plus the wonderfully exciting Jalopy Figure 8 races and in 2 weeks we have a 50 lap late model event plus the $1,000 mega spectator race which promises to be a must see.
