Last night, at the age of 102, longtime Toronto Star sports reporter Milt Dunnell passed away. There's a nice tribute to him, written by his son, here. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dunnell on the shuttle ride from the King St. Holiday Inn down to the CNE grounds during a Toronto Molson Indy weekend in the early '90s. He was extremely friendly and I remember we chatted about some of the races, including Jacques Villeneuve's Toyota Atlantic appearance. I'll never forget at the end of the ride when we stepped off the bus and he introduced me to Brian Williams (then of the CBC). "Brian, do you know my friend Greg MacPherson?" I almost fell over. I never had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Dunnell again, but I'll never forget my chance meeting with this legend of Canadian sports journalism...

BRANTFORD, ON – The #10 HB Motorsports Dodges will again be carrying the same familiar blue and white colours of Haldex Commercial Vehicle Systems when the green flag waves to start the 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
Confirmation of the return of last year’s Title Sponsor was conveyed to the Brantford, Ontario-based team on December 21st at the Canadian headquarters of the commercial vehicle systems company in Guelph, Ontario.
“We are thrilled to have Haldex back again in 2007”, stated driver Doug Brown following the meeting. “Their management and staff have been extremely supportive of our efforts despite our 2007 results and they obviously appreciate that the nature of our sport can dramatically affect a team’s performance. With their continuing support and the interest expressed by others, we are determined to provide Haldex and our other returning and new marketing partners with the exposure and results they deserve.
“2007 being our first year of involvement with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the first year for NASCAR racing in Canada, it is great to get involved on the ground floor in any event - obviously a learning curve for all of us,” stated Brian W Bowerman,Director North American Aftermarket Sales, Haldex Commercial Vehicle Systems.
“Being the first year, we were not well prepared to give our full assistance and backing to Doug Brown’s race team (in 2007). We did however find it very exciting, fast paced and full of surprises in many aspects of the sport, but that is racing and that is what also makes it so exciting.
We at Haldex are pleased to continue with our sponsorship leading into 2008. We have a wide range of customers across Canada and many have contacted us excited to see the Haldex name so prominently displayed creating enthusiasm within their own organizations since they have involvement with our Company. We are looking forward to taking every opportunity to take both HB Motorsports and the Haldex name to the next level and make them a household name in both our industry and outside our industries.”
Haldex Commercial Vehicle Systems (http://www.hbsna.com/) is a leading manufacturer and distributor of heavy-duty air brake systems and suspension control components. It operates globally with North American headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, and manufacturing and engineering facilities throughout the world. While Haldex boasts majority market share in spring brakes, slack adjusters and ABS systems throughout Canada, they are also well known for their trusted remanufactured line and Ontario-located brake reline facilities.

Doug Brown and his team will continue to pursue additional sponsorship/ marketing partners seeking an exciting and popular medium for the promotion of their products and/or services to a demographically desirable audience.
“With the diverse national schedule we had last season, the terrific coverage provided by TSN and the full support of NASCAR and Canadian Tire, we believe our sports and our series is ideally suited to businesses seeking alternative ways to reach the Canadian consumer and to attract new clients seeking those products and services.”

HAMILTON, ON – The Cameron Motorsports (CMI) elite karting team is pleased to announce the re-signing of Rotax Senior rookie Melissa Curran. The Ontario, Canada resident will travel South throughout the winter months to compete in her new Rotax powered Maranello chassis at the ’08 edition of the Florida Winter Tour.
“We are excited to have Melissa back with the Cameron Motorsports squad,” exclaimed Danielle Duffy from the Cameron Motorsports Karting Complex in Hamilton, ON. “She is our first driver aboard our new line of Maranello chassis and I am confident that she will represent us well throughout the 2008 racing season. Both Melissa and the Cameron Motorsports team are ready to head south and get back on track.”
Curran, who will make the jump to the senior ranks of karting, will also switch chassis’ switching from a CRG model to the new Maranello. Though Curran will be swapping brands, she will not be switching teams as the Canadian karting operation of Cameron Motorsports will import and distribute both lines in 2008. The young talent will also be under the watchful eye of national level tuner Brian Bettencourt.
“Melissa is a fast and fearless driver,” commented CMI’s Team manager Trevor Wickens. “The Maranello chassis is a great chassis and we can’t wait to begin working with it. We will have a few on track at the Florida Winter Tour and hope to begin with some strong results.”

Brockville Hangover Re-scheduled
Courtesy Brockville Ontario Speedway
BROCKVILLE, ON - Brockville Ontario Speedway was forced to postpone their annual New Year's day Hangover Enduro after a local thaw made the track unraceable.
Race fans will have to wait another few weeks to the start of the season. The fast quarter mile oval's surface has recieved a makeover this fall and the combination of that and the recent thaw has cars sinking into the surface as the lack of frost is no longer keeping the ground firm.
The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 3rd.
*Editor's Note - The postponement could be a blessing in disguise, allowing more people to go check it out that might not after a night of New Year's Eve festivities. It's a unique event and it's great to see the event postponed as opposed to cancel due to poor weather!
