(Shediac, N.B.) -- Phil Coombes and Mike Power Jr. captured their first feature wins in over two years on Sunday afternoon during the Fathers' Day stock car racing event at the Centre for Speed in nearby Barachois, N.B., which marked the second points championship event of the 2008 season.
Power (58x) of Salisbury, who last captured a win as CFS a number of years back as a regular Streetstock competitor, started and ended the day in victory lane aboard his United Rentals Impala SS Sportsman racecar. He captured the first race of the day, the Trophy Dash, then took home the win in the 20-lap semifinal before withstanding the pressure of a few restarts in the 20-lap feature to capture his first win of the season ahead of last week's feature winner, Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois and the defending points champion, Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook. Meanwhile, Bourgeois was first to cross the finish line in his Gautreau's Used Auto Parts Ford Fusion during the 10-lap heat ahead of Gaudet and Power.
In Thundercat division action, the 'milkman' delivered as Phil Coombes (#15) of Shediac Cape also visited victory lane for the first time in a few years by taking advantage of a late-race restart and disqualification to outdistance the field to the finish line. Coombes avoided a late race collision involving the two front-runners, Wilfred Simon (#10) of Bouctouche and Jacques Leblanc (#30) from Shediac, to capture the feature ahead of Simon and Eldon Campbell (#17) of Moncton. Last week's dominant feature winner saw his day go up in smoke as Denis Leblanc (#95) of Bouctouche blew his engine in the semi-final. The feature win for Coombes capped off a pretty good day for Shediac Cape driver who can usually be seen racing around southeastern NB during the week delivering dairy products to various homes and businesses. In fact, Coombes finished second in the heat to go along
with a third place showing in the semi. Meanwhile, Leblanc took home wins in the heat and semi-final before seeing the black disqualification flag fly in the feature for rough driving.
In Streetstock action, Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane continued his early season dominance by once again capturing the 20-lap feature to go along with his first place showing in the heat. The only blemish on Doiron record so far in 2008 is the win by Mark Sherwood (#44) of Dieppe in today's semi-final. Sherwood also come home second in the feature just ahead of Mark Williams (#24) of Cocagne.
In the always-competitive TigerCat division, Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac took home first place hardware in both the 20-lap feature and heat for his first two victories of the season. In the feature, it was almost a photo finish as Gautreau edged out Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois by a few mere centimeters at the stripe. Not far behind was Marcel Goguen (#77x) of Grande Digue in third. In the 20-lap semi-final, former division track champion, Gérald Brun (#33) was victorious ahead of Landry and Goguen.
Racing resumes at the Centre for Speed, Greater Moncton's Playground of Power, next Saturday evening, June 21st at 6:30 p.m. with the Schools Out Celebration where all school-aged children will be admitted free of charge. The event will feature points championship racing in all divisions as well as the first event of the season for the Winged Outlaw Go-Kart league, which is open to young drivers between 11 and 15 years of age. Front gates and grandstand will open at 5:30 p.m.
