CAYUGA, ONTARIO (September 21, 2008) – For the second time in two days, Mike Stawicki won a Pro Modified Racing Association event, presented by Torco Racing Fuels Ontario.
The two-race weekend was a culmination of rescheduled events from earlier in the season, and the Medina, New York driver won both ends of the double-header. After his victory in the Third Annual Victoria Day PMRA Challenge held Sunday at Cayuga Dragway, the driver of the G-Force Race Cars 1967 Camaro was once again pleased with the events of the day.
The win was the fourth for Stawicki and the G-Force team, and the most wins for a team in PMRA history. The day before he won the Fourth Annual KC Auto Parts Family Day PMRA Challenge.
“We stayed consistent,” said the 53-year old Stawicki after the Sunday race, who has been racing Pro Modifieds since 1990. “I wanted to put that five up there (a sub six-second pass), but we’re happy with what happened today.”
Stawicki was pitted against Ike Maier of Tottenham, Ontario in the final. It was Maier’s first PMRA final, and he was eliminated by Stawicki who ran a 6.136-second, 236.51-mph run over Maier’s 6.987-second, 197.05-mph.
Stawicki did set a new PMRA series elapsed time record, with a 6.04-second pass in the semi-final round on Sunday. Setting a new speed record was Mark Nielson of Brantford, Ontario with a 237.30-mph posting during qualifying.
Jim Salemi, crew chief and builder of the winning car, said their strategy was basically the same all weekend. “We made some adjustments to the car today with the cooler weather, but we had no issues with the car or the track.”
Salemi also noted that his team’s victory over the weekend was dedicated to the late Steve Engle, a Pro Modified driver who lost his life racing recently. “We are dedicating this win to Steve and his family,” said Salemi.
Stawicki may have won the races at Cayuga, but Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario retained his slim points lead over Terry Brown of Caledonia, Ontario to win the 2008 PMRA Championship, his second consecutive title.
Stawicki, who qualified number one with a 6.068-second, 237.21 mph effort, eliminated Joe Boniferro of Niagara Falls, Ontario in the first round, and had a bye run in the semi-final when Bruce Boland broke the transmission in his B&B Racing Corvette and could not stage the car. Maier bobbled a bit off the line but chased down number two qualifier Mark Nielson of Brantford, Ontario in his 1967 Camaro. In the semi, Maier in his 1969 Camaro, was caught napping at the line, but once again powered to a win, this time over Ralph Andreacchi of Maple, Ontario with his Skull Motorsports 1953 Studebaker.
