NCATS: Tough night for Castrol Dodge at Cayuga

DJ Kennington’s brand new Castrol Dodge hit the track for the first time at Cayuga Speedway for the Crown Jewel 200, round one of the 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire series this past weekend. The Castrol Dodge Avenger showed great speed right from the first practice laps; unfortunately their race came to a premature end.

As DJ Kennington pulled onto the 5/8 mile track just outside Hamilton, Ontario the hard work by the entire Castrol Dodge team was evident. “The finishing touches were put on this car earlier this week” said the driver. “The guys did a great job, we were fast right away”. This claim was backed up by Kennington who posted the second fastest qualifying time on the day, just three one thousandths off the pole speed, earning the Castrol Dodge a starting spot on the outside of row one.

The Castrol Dodge was as usual in a position to succeed to start the race. After the drop of the green flags Kennington launched his car forward hanging on the outside line to lead the first lap of the 2008 racing season and claim five bonus points. “Things went according to plan; we got those bonus points and then just settled in to a comfortable race pace”.

Without ever taxing the car Kennington had the Castrol Dodge up front and seemingly on cruise control. Suddenly, their fortunes changed. “In a split second the car’s performance wasn’t there, I knew we had a big problem” said a disappointed driver. “It only took a few seconds to realize it was serious and I pulled off the track”.

After surveying the situation himself Kennington was quickly able to realize a part failure under the hood was serious enough to end their night after only 17 laps. “Every part in that car is brand new, it’s just a failure that happens sometimes” concluded the driver. “We had a problem in this race last year but went on to finish a close second in the championship, so we’re not deterred at all, this Castrol Dodge will be running back up front next week” he added.

NASCAR Canadian Tire series competition resumes Saturday May 31st at the Autdrome St. Eustache in the first of three visits to Quebec this season. The 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire series will consist of thirteen events on ovals, road courses and temporary street circuits from coast to coast. Each race will be broadcast on TSN.
