Robert Wickens to run World Series by Renault in 2008 with Carlin Motorsport

December 20, 2007 - It was announced today that Canadian Robert Wickens will be competing in the World Series by Renault for the 2008 season. The Red Bull Junior driver will be part of a two-car Red Bull effort with Carlin Motorsport (Carlin) based in Aldershot, England. Robert ran the final two World Series by Renault races on the 2007 schedule at Estoril, Portugal and Barcelona, Spain with Carlin.

World Series Renault (WSR) is the flagship class in a series that features single-marque open-wheel and sports cars. The World Series FR3.5 Robert will be driving is all new for 2008. The new chassis will be powered by a 24V V6 engine featuring flex fuel technology and capable of delivering up to 500bhp with E85 bioethanol.

The series receives wide acclaim throughout Europe and regularly draws huge crowds at every venue. The 2008 World Series Formula Renault 3.5 championship will once again feature nine meetings (17 races). Seven will be held as part of the World Series by Renault meetings (Belgium, Turkey or Italy, Germany, Hungary, the United Kingdom, France and Spain), one will take place at the Monaco GP (1 race) and one at another venue (tbd).

Carlin Motorsport was founded in 1996. Over 150 drivers have passed through their doors - many on their way to the highest echelons of the sport. Carlin has played an integral role in the careers of F1 drivers such as Takuma Sato, Narain Karthikeyan, Anthony Davidson, Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel. Carlin Motorsports also fields cars in the F2 Euro Series and Formula Renault 2.0 UK Series.

Robert is very pleased to be joining the series full time in 2008. "It was a terrific opportunity to drive the final two races of 2007 with Carlin" commented Robert. "We learned a lot during those sessions and now we can take that forward into 2008. I am looking forward to testing the new car as soon as possible."
