Charest considers kicking in taxpayer money to 'save' Montreal's F1 race

It's working.

F1 decided it would like to make more money for its trip to Canada.

What better time than during a federal election to make the politicians fork over truckloads of taxpayer dollars to 'save' the popular event?

And how's this for a scenario?

Step 1: Announce the race is cancelled.

Step 2: The promoter says he had no clue what was coming.

Step 3: The promoter announces he's no longer interested in promoting the event, to perpetuate the myth that he's not in cahoots with F1 and its play for taxpayer dollars.

Step 4: The promoter mentions the fact that government money is the only way to save the event.

Step 5: Wait for desperate politicians to show up with the money.

Step 7: Laugh all the way to the bank.

When first announced, it looked like only Stephen Harper was going to take the bait. Now there are two fish on the line, given Premier Charest's apparent willingness to fork over tax dollars to win votes. Can Montreal's mayor be far behind with another Brink's Truck full of your money?

PREDICTION: F1 fans, don't sell your seat cushions just yet. I have little doubt this race will happen in 2009, promoted by its longtime promoter... once the appropriate individuals have received a sufficient quantity of your tax dollars, of course.

From Canadian Press

QUEBEC — Premier Jean Charest says any intervention by the Quebec government to save the Canadian Grand Prix would be conditional on taxpayers seeing economic spinoffs.
Speaking today in Quebec City, Charest stressed the economic aspect has guided past efforts by the province to keep the Formula One event in Montreal.
The premier says Quebec's economic development minister is meeting today with organizers to try to find out why the Montreal race was dropped from the 2009 international calendar.
A spokesman for race promoter Normand Legault has said government bodies are looking at ways to make sure the annual race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve goes ahead in 2009.
