Targa Newfoundland...and they're off!

(St. John's, NL - September 14) - A beautiful sunny day welcomed the start of Targa Newfoundland. All competing teams made the noon start in front of the Keg on Harbour Drive and completed the three stages of the prologue without incident.

Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was on hand to officially send off each team with the traditional waving of the provincial flag. Teams then travelled to the Flatrock and Torbay area for the prologue portion of Targa that helped seed the cars for the starting order on Monday. It also enabled the teams to get a feel for their cars, their communication systems and overall Targa experience as they begin six days of grueling competition.

Hundreds of spectators lined the roadways and cheered each car as it passed by. Competitors enjoyed the enthusiasm and new entries were very impressed by the hospitality and scenery. "I race all over North America and I was totally blown away by the enthusiasm of the spectators and especially the kids," said Andrew Comrie-Pickard.

Day 2 is the first full day of competition throughout parts of the southern Avalon and central Newfoundland. They will compete in six stages with the day ending in Gander with a car show at the Gander Community Centre.
