CALGARY HERALD: Race City Speedway to become a garbage dump?

City to help relocate speedway

Calgary Herald // Tuesday, January 15, 2008

The City of Calgary will work with Race City Speedway to find another location before 2010 when its lease expires on municipally owned land.
Ald. Ric McIver, whose ward includes the auto racetrack, asked city officials Monday to consult with the owners. Bureaucrats said the lease on the site in southeast Calgary expires in 2010, because the land is needed for a garbage dump. As a result, McIver said the city should help the owners find another site.
"It's a private business, but they are being kicked off of city land," he said. "If they are going to be out of their current site after 2010, the time to start looking for a new site for them is now.
"I'm thinking specifically of places along the boundaries of the city."
McIver said the track is a major tourism draw for Calgary and can only get better with the help of the city.
"The owners are interested in investing some money and building a new track," he said. "So if we can bring NASCAR or one of their junior affiliates to Calgary on a regular basis, it's just one other thing that puts the City of Calgary on the map."
Race City Speedway, located in southeast Calgary, currently has three racetracks.
